Key takeaways

  • Bing Webmaster Tools is the only free, direct interface to the retrieval layer behind ChatGPT search and Microsoft Copilot

  • Setup takes minutes with one click import from Google Search Console

  • Four reports carry the weekly workload, Site Explorer, URL inspection, search performance, and crawl requests

  • The AI Performance report shows total citations, citation share, and the grounding queries engines actually generated to find you, at no cost

  • URL submission and IndexNow key setup both live inside the tool, and the daily submission quota grows with the age of your verified property

I've built content and visibility programs for enterprise tech brands for more than 16 years, and here is a confession. For most of that time I treated Bing Webmaster Tools the way everyone else did, as the dashboard you verify once and never open again. Then ChatGPT search went live on Bing's infrastructure, and the dashboard nobody opened became the control panel for AI retrieval.

Nearly every guide to this tool was written in a different era, when the pitch was scraping a few extra points of traffic from a minority search engine. That pitch is dead. The new pitch is that this free dashboard is your only direct interface to the system ChatGPT retrieves through, and this guide covers it entirely through that lens.

I am going to stay on the tool itself here. What each report shows, what to do with it, and which ones actually deserve weekly attention. The strategy questions of what to fix and how to rank live in adjacent guides that I will point to as they come up.

What is Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free platform for monitoring and managing how your website appears in Bing search. It includes index coverage reports, crawl diagnostics, URL submission, IndexNow integration, search performance data, keyword research, backlink analysis, and automated site scans, all at no cost.

Think of it as Google Search Console's quieter sibling with a few surprising extras. Where GSC stops at your own property's data, Bing's toolkit throws in a keyword research tool with real Bing query volumes and a backlink explorer that shows link profiles for any domain, including competitors. Free versions of things SEO platforms charge real money for.

But the reason this tool earns a standing slot in your week has nothing to do with bing.com traffic. ChatGPT search retrieves through Bing's index, Copilot answers from it, and Seer Interactive measured 87% of ChatGPT search citations matching Bing's top organic results. Manage this dashboard and you're managing your AI retrieval surface.

People search for this tool under half a dozen names, which tells you something about how little it gets discussed. Bing webmaster, Bing master, Bing web tools, the Bing indexing tool. They all mean this dashboard. The tool does not index anything itself. It shows you what Bing already holds, lets you request faster crawls, and tells you what blocked the pages that failed.

The reason it earns a standing slot in your week has nothing to do with bing.com traffic. ChatGPT search retrieves through Bing, Copilot answers from the same source, and the overlap between Bing's top results and ChatGPT's citations is high enough that I treat Bing position as a leading indicator. Manage this dashboard and you are managing your AI retrieval surface.

Why does Bing Webmaster Tools matter more in the AI era

Because the index it manages now feeds answer engines with enormous reach. ChatGPT serves 900 million weekly users and holds the majority of B2B AI referral traffic, and its live search runs on Bing's index. Bing Webmaster Tools is where you verify, expand, and repair your presence in that index.

I've watched teams spend five figures a month on AI visibility tracking tools while the dashboard controlling their retrieval eligibility sat unverified. That is the wrong order of operations by a wide margin. Track later. Control first. A tracking tool tells you that you are not being cited. This tells you why.

There's a second order effect too. Because so few B2B teams actively manage Bing, the ones who do compete against a thinner field. The same article stuck on Google page two can sit on Bing page one, and Bing page one is the citation pool ChatGPT draws from.

Worth being precise about scope though. This dashboard covers Bing and Copilot directly, and ChatGPT indirectly. It tells you nothing about Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Mode, which retrieve differently. It is a high leverage instrument for two surfaces, not a universal one.

How do you set up Bing Webmaster Tools

Sign in with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account at bing.com/webmasters, then either import your verified properties from Google Search Console in one click or verify manually with an XML file, meta tag, or DNS record. Submit your sitemap immediately after verification.

Step 1, verify. The GSC import carries over your verification and takes under a minute. Manual options exist if you'd rather not connect accounts, and the DNS route is the most durable since it survives site rebuilds.

Step 2, submit your sitemap. Sitemaps live under the Sitemaps tab. Submit the XML index and confirm Bing reads it cleanly, because parse errors here quietly starve discovery.

Step 3, configure IndexNow. Generate or install the API key so new and updated URLs push to Bing instantly. On Wix this is native, no code required.

Step 4, run your first site scan. The scan crawls up to 10,000 pages on demand and flags technical issues, missing metadata, and render problems. Treat the first report as your baseline and rerun after fixes.

Which reports should you check every week

Four reports carry the weekly workload. Site Explorer for index coverage, URL inspection for page level diagnosis, search performance for impression and click trends, and crawl requests for Bingbot activity. Fifteen minutes a week covers all four once the baseline is healthy.

Site Explorer

Your library as Bing sees it, folder by folder, with index status per URL. Watch for entire sections missing, which usually traces back to crawl path problems like orphaned pages with no internal links.

URL inspection

Page level truth. Status, last crawl, and the specific blocker on anything that failed. Run new money pages through it after publishing and after every major update. If you already use the URL inspection tool in Search Console, the mental model transfers directly.

Search performance

Impressions, clicks, position, and queries from Bing search. The query data doubles as intent research, because these are the phrasings Bing's userbase, and by extension Copilot, actually uses. It skews more literal than Google's query data, which makes it unusually good input for keyword to page mapping.

Crawl requests

Bingbot activity over time. A falling crawl rate warns you about server issues or lost trust before index coverage visibly decays. Pair it with your server logs, where the split between training crawlers and live retrieval agents is the honest measure of whether AI engines actually consume your content.

What does the AI Performance report show

The AI Performance report gives you total citations, cited page counts, citation share against competitors, intent and topic breakdowns, and grounding queries, which are the rewritten queries the engine generated internally to find documents. It is free with a verified property and it is the closest thing to first party AI citation data that exists.

This is the report almost nobody has opened, and it answers the question every AI visibility tool charges you to guess at. Most of those tools sample a prompt set they wrote themselves and report mention counts against it. That is a survey. This is measurement.

Grounding queries are the part worth the setup on their own. When someone asks an answer engine a question, the engine does not search for what they typed. It rewrites the question into its own retrieval queries. Those rewrites are the queries you are actually competing on, and they are frequently nothing like the keywords in your plan. Seeing them changes what you write next.

Citation share gives you a share of voice number without paying for a share of voice product. Intents and topics tell you which query classes you win and which your competitors own. Used together, the report splits your library into two populations that matter enormously and are otherwise indistinguishable. Pages that get retrieved but never cited, which is a format problem. And pages that get neither, which is a ranking problem. Those need completely different fixes, and guessing wrong wastes a quarter.

One honest caveat. This data covers Copilot and Bing AI surfaces directly, not ChatGPT itself. Because ChatGPT retrieves through the same infrastructure, it works as a proxy rather than a direct read. It is first party and free, which beats a vendor grading its own prompt list, but do not report it as ChatGPT data. If you want a fuller picture, pair it with AI search visibility tracking.

How does URL submission work inside the tool

URL submission lets you manually request a crawl for priority pages against a daily quota that grows with your account age. It sits under URL Submission in the left nav, alongside the IndexNow key settings that let your site push changes automatically instead.

Manual submission is your scalpel. It is for the handful of pages where hours matter, a launch post, a comparison page, a rebuttal to something a competitor published. Your quota grows as your verified history builds, so a property you set up last week behaves differently from one you have held for a year.

The automatic path is IndexNow, and its API key lives under Settings in this dashboard. That is the extent of the tool's involvement. How the protocol works, which engines honor it, and how to confirm it is firing are covered in what IndexNow is and why it matters.

A submission habit worth building. Do not submit a page until its inbound internal links are live. Submission gets the crawler there. Links are what convince the indexer to keep the page. Doing it in the wrong order is why teams submit the same URL three times and get the same result.

What do the SEO reports and site scan find

The site scan audits up to 10,000 pages for technical and on page issues, flagging missing titles and descriptions, broken links, oversized pages, and render problems. The backlink and keyword tools round it out with free competitive data most platforms charge for.

Two findings matter disproportionately for AI visibility and are worth pulling out of the noise.

Metadata precision. Bing leans on your titles and descriptions far more literally than Google does, which turns a neglected field into a live ranking input. I unpack the mechanics in my guide to Bing search optimization.

Render integrity. Content Bingbot cannot see is content no Bing powered AI surface can retrieve. The scan will flag it. Cross reference the findings with an AEO content audit and you fix the machine layer and the answer layer in the same pass.

Ignore the oversized page notices if you are on Wix. The platform bundles inline JavaScript, CSS, and warmup data into every page, so the notice fires library wide and is not actionable. Learning which warnings are platform artifacts is half the skill of reading this report.

How does Bing Webmaster Tools compare to Google Search Console

Search Console monitors the bigger traffic engine, while Bing Webmaster Tools monitors the system AI engines retrieve through, and Bing's version bundles keyword research, competitive backlink data, site scans, and AI citation data that Search Console lacks. You need both, for different jobs.

Neither replaces the other, and the split is cleaner than people assume. Search Console is your traffic instrument. This is your retrieval instrument. If your reporting only has one of them, you are measuring half the surface.

Inside the Engine Optimization Matrix, Google Search Console serves the SEO engine while this tool stretches across SEO, AEO, and GEO at once, which is remarkable reach for something free. It is the closest thing digital visibility work has to a cheat code right now.

The tools you check daily shape the outcomes you get. Add one dashboard to the rotation and you are suddenly managing the half of search your competitors forgot exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bing Webmaster Tools?

Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free platform for monitoring and managing how your site appears in Bing search. It covers index coverage, crawl diagnostics, URL submission, IndexNow, backlink data, keyword research, and site scans, and it's the only direct interface to the index that feeds ChatGPT search and Copilot.

Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?

Yes, completely. Every feature, including the SEO reports, keyword research tool, backlink explorer, and site scan, comes at no cost with no paid tier.

How do I verify my site without Google Search Console?

Three options. Upload an XML verification file to your site root, add a meta tag to your homepage, or create a DNS CNAME record. The GSC import is simply the fastest path if you already have a verified Google property.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools show ChatGPT traffic?

Not directly. The performance reports cover Bing search impressions and clicks. For AI retrieval activity you'll need server logs, where agents like ChatGPT-User and BingBot reveal when engines fetch your pages.

How often does Bing Webmaster Tools data update?

Most reports refresh daily, with search performance data typically running a day or two behind. Crawl and submission data appears in near real time.

What is the URL submission limit in Bing Webmaster Tools?

Your daily quota scales with how long the site has been verified, starting around 10 URLs per day and growing substantially over time. IndexNow submissions run outside the quota entirely.

Can I manage multiple sites in one Bing Webmaster Tools account?

Yes. One account holds multiple verified properties with role based access, so agencies and in house teams can manage entire portfolios from a single login.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools include keyword research?

Yes, with a genuinely useful twist. Its keyword tool reports Bing query volume, which reflects the demand feeding Copilot and ChatGPT retrieval rather than Google demand, and it's free at any volume.

How is Bing Webmaster Tools different from Google Search Console?

The feature sets rhyme, but Bing's version includes built in keyword research, backlink data for any domain, an on demand site scan auditor, and IndexNow support. GSC covers a bigger traffic engine, while Bing's tool covers the index AI engines retrieve from.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools help with Microsoft Copilot visibility?

Yes. Copilot retrieves from Bing's index, and this is the only dashboard that shows you what that index holds of your site. The site scan, URL inspection, and crawl request reports surface exactly what keeps pages out of Copilot answers, and fixing what they flag flows straight through to Copilot visibility.

Should I use Bing Webmaster Tools if Bing sends me almost no traffic?

That framing undercounts the value. Bing's index now feeds ChatGPT search, which holds the majority of B2B AI referral traffic. The dashboard's worth is measured in AI citations it unlocks, not just blue link clicks from bing.com.
