Key takeaways

  • Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers found agencies average about $3,209 a month on retainer, with an average hourly rate of about $111.

  • Monthly retainers dominate, used by about 78% of SEO providers.

  • AI search work, such as AEO, GEO and citation tracking, adds scope that older SEO packages don't include.

  • Judge price against scope and outcomes, not hours or deliverables alone.

  • Look for a vendor that can create content as well as evaluate it, so recommendations turn into published pages.

Ask five SEO agencies for a quote and you'll get five numbers that seem to have nothing to do with each other. That's not because some of them are lying. It's because SEO isn't one product. One agency is quoting technical fixes, another is quoting content, a third is quoting links, and a fourth is quoting all of it plus AI search work.

So the real question isn't what SEO costs. It's what you're buying, and whether the price matches it. Here's how to make sense of the numbers.

How much does an SEO agency cost?

Most SEO agencies charge a monthly retainer. Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers found agencies average about $3,209 a month and about $111 an hour, while specialist B2B and enterprise agencies often charge $5,000 to $15,000 a month or more. Price depends on scope, competition, AI search work and how much content is included.

What does the data say about SEO agency pricing?

The most widely cited benchmark is Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. It found an average monthly agency retainer of about $3,209, close to the $3,250 consultants charge and well above the roughly $1,349 freelancers charge. The average hourly rate was about $111, and around 78% of providers bill through a monthly retainer.

The average hides a wide spread. The single most common retainer band in that survey was $501 to $1,000 a month, much of it local business SEO, while about 57% of agencies charge more than $1,000. Specialist B2B and enterprise agencies, especially those handling content and AI search, typically sit well above the average.

What are the main SEO pricing models?

There are three models. Monthly retainers cover ongoing work, such as technical fixes, content, links and reporting, and they're the right fit for most companies because SEO compounds over time. Hourly pricing works for audits, second opinions and specific fixes, but it's a poor fit for ongoing growth. Project pricing suits defined pieces of work, such as a site migration, an audit or a content library rebuild.

Some agencies, including mine, price ongoing work in content hours. You buy a block of hours each month, and the agency spends them on whatever moves the needle most, whether that's a new pillar page, a rebuild or schema work. It's more flexible than a fixed list of deliverables, because priorities change as the data comes in.

What drives SEO agency pricing up or down?

Five things move the price most. Competition, because ranking and being cited in a crowded category takes more work than in a quiet one. Scope, meaning whether content, technical fixes, links and AI search work are all included. Content volume and depth, since original research and expert interviews cost more than lightly edited articles. Site size and complexity, which drive technical work.

And the agency's specialization, because B2B and enterprise expertise commands a premium.

Location matters less than it used to, but it still shows up. Ahrefs found big regional differences, with many providers in lower-cost markets charging under $1,000 a month. A low price isn't automatically a bad deal, but for B2B buyers with long sales cycles, depth of strategy usually matters more than the hourly rate.

What does AI search work add to the cost?

Older SEO packages were built around rankings in 10 blue links. In 2026, a serious program also has to earn citations in Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. That adds real work, including restructuring pages with answer-first sections, adding schema and entity data, building mentions on the sources AI assistants trust and tracking citations across platforms.

That's why packages labeled AEO, GEO or AI visibility usually cost more than basic SEO. When you compare quotes, check whether AI search work is actually included or just mentioned. GEO vs SEO explains how the two overlap, and how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT covers the measurement you should expect.

What should SEO packages for AI and video search include?

A package built for AI and video search should cover four things on top of core SEO. Answer-first content and FAQ structure, so pages can be lifted into AI answers. Schema, including Article, FAQPage, Organization and VideoObject markup. Video produced and optimized for YouTube and on-site search, with transcripts, chapters and descriptions that AI systems can read. And citation tracking across the AI platforms your buyers use.

Video matters more than many buyers realize. YouTube is among the most cited sources in AI answers, and transcripts give AI systems text they can quote. Video SEO services and video in AI search explain why.

What is the average retainer for a full-service marketing agency?

Full-service marketing retainers vary even more than SEO, because they bundle strategy, content, paid media, design and sometimes video. For B2B tech companies, a focused program often starts in the low thousands a month, while integrated programs covering several channels commonly run well into five figures.

The more useful question is what each dollar is buying. A full-service retainer that spreads a modest budget thinly across 6 channels usually underperforms a focused retainer that does two or three things properly.

Should you hire an agency, a freelancer or a consultant?

Freelancers are the cheapest option and work well for focused tasks, such as writing or technical fixes, when you already have a clear strategy. Consultants are best for strategy and audits, but usually don't do the hands-on work. Agencies cost more, but bring a mix of skills, more capacity and continuity when people change.

For most growing B2B companies, the deciding factor is who owns the strategy. If you have a strong in-house lead, freelancers can extend your team cheaply. If you don't, an agency or consultant that sets direction is usually worth the premium, because executing the wrong plan efficiently is still wasted money.

Should your SEO agency create content or just evaluate it?

This is the question I'd push hardest on, because it quietly decides how much value you get for the money. A lot of SEO vendors are evaluators. They audit your site, score your pages and hand you keyword lists and content briefs, then leave the writing to your team.

That's useful, but it means the hardest and most expensive part of the work, actually creating content that ranks and gets cited, still lands on you.

The vendors worth paying for do both. They create the content, evaluate it against what search engines and AI assistants reward, then use what they learn to make the next piece better. When the same team writes and measures, nothing gets lost in a handoff, and recommendations become published pages instead of sitting in a slide deck. It's why we built MQL Magnet to create and evaluate under one roof, because an audit nobody acts on doesn't move pipeline.

So when you compare quotes, ask one simple question. Who writes the content, and who checks whether it worked? If the answer is two different companies, or your own stretched team, add that cost to the price before you compare.

How do you tell a fair price from a bad deal?

A fair price matches a clear scope and measurable outcomes. Watch for very low retainers that promise everything, guaranteed rankings, long contracts with no exit, reporting based only on traffic and packages that list deliverables without explaining why they matter. Those usually mean volume over strategy.

Ask what you'll have after 90 days, how success will be measured and what happens if priorities change. Good agencies answer those questions plainly. The best B2B SEO and AEO agencies lists the questions I'd ask before signing, and content marketing ROI covers how to measure what you get.

How should a growing B2B company budget for SEO?

Budget for at least 6 months, because SEO and AI visibility compound slowly and early months are mostly foundation work. Decide which outcome matters most, whether that's pipeline, citations in AI answers or recovering an existing library, and fund that first rather than spreading thinly.

For most seed to Series B companies, a focused retainer that combines content, technical SEO and AI visibility work beats a cheaper package that only covers one of them. You can see how we structure ours on the MQL Magnet pricing page.

Where does SEO pricing fit in the Engine Optimization Matrix™?

The Engine Optimization Matrix™ is a practical way to compare quotes. Map what each agency includes against the four engines, SEO, AEO, GEO and LLMO, and the five levers, Content, Schema, Distribution, Authority and Citation. A cheap quote usually covers one or two cells. A fair one covers the cells that matter for your goals.

And if you're looking for a more thorough lesson, Mastering AI Visibility puts AI SEO, AEO, GEO and LLMO in one Demand Doctrine™ edition. The book is available November 18th.

About $111 an hour on average in Ahrefs' survey, with $100 to $150 the most common band.

What is the most common SEO pricing model?

Monthly retainers, used by about 78% of SEO providers.

Why do SEO quotes vary so much?

Because agencies quote different scopes, from technical fixes only to full content, links and AI search programs.

Does AEO or GEO cost more than SEO?

Usually, because it adds answer-first restructuring, schema, off-site mentions and citation tracking across AI platforms.

What should SEO packages for AI and video search include?

Answer-first content, FAQ and VideoObject schema, optimized video with transcripts and citation tracking across AI platforms.

What is the average retainer for a full-service marketing agency?

It varies widely. Focused B2B programs often start in the low thousands a month, while integrated multi-channel programs can reach five figures.

Are cheap SEO packages worth it?

Rarely for B2B. Very low retainers usually mean volume over strategy and little or no AI search work.

How long should an SEO contract be?

What is content hours pricing?

A model where you buy a monthly block of hours and the agency spends them on the highest-impact work, rather than a fixed list of deliverables.

Should an SEO agency create content or only audit it?

Ideally both. An agency that creates and evaluates content closes the gap between recommendations and published pages, so insights turn into results faster.
