How to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT, Free and Paid

Updated: 1 hour ago

Key takeaways
|
Somewhere right now, a buyer is asking ChatGPT which agencies, platforms or vendors they should look at. ChatGPT is answering with a short list and a sentence or two about each name on it. You're either on that list or you aren't, and most companies have no idea which.
That's the problem brand mention tracking solves. It doesn't need to be expensive to start. You can get a reliable picture with a spreadsheet and an hour a month. You just need to do it in a way that accounts for how ChatGPT actually behaves.
How do you track brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Write 20 to 30 prompts your buyers would actually ask, run each one several times in a temporary chat, and log whether your brand is named, whether your site is cited, where you appear and how you're described. Repeat monthly for free, or use a prompt tracking tool to automate daily checks. |
How do you track brand mentions in AI search?
Track a fixed set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features, run each one several times, and log whether you're named, cited and accurately described. You can do it free with a spreadsheet, or use an AI search monitoring tool to automate daily checks and compare competitors. |
How do I check my brand in ChatGPT for free?
Start with the prompts, because they decide everything else. Write 20 to 30 questions your buyers would genuinely ask, phrased the way they'd type them, with context. Mix four kinds. Problem questions, like how to fix a falling lead flow. Category questions, like the best B2B content agencies for Series B SaaS. Comparison questions that name you against a competitor. Learn more about AI search prompts.
And branded questions, like what is MQL Magnet.
AI search prompts covers how to find real buyer language.
Then run them in a temporary chat, so your own history and memory don't shape the answer, ideally while logged out or in a clean browser. Record five things for each run. Whether your brand is named. Whether your website is cited as a source. Where you appear in the list. Which competitors appear. And how ChatGPT describes you, in its own words.
A simple spreadsheet is enough, with one row per prompt per run and a column for each of those five things. Do it once a month and you have a free tracking program.
Why does one check tell you almost nothing?
ChatGPT doesn't give the same answer every time. Ask the same question twice and you'll often get a different list in a different order, with different sources. That's normal behavior for large language models, explained in AI non-determinism, but it means a single screenshot is close to meaningless.
The fix is repetition. Run each prompt at least three to five times per session and record how often you appear, not just whether you appeared once. Being named in four out of five runs is a strong position. Being named in one out of five is a weak one, even though both would produce a screenshot showing your name.
What should you measure besides mentions?
Mentions are the headline, but they're only one of four signals. Citations tell you whether ChatGPT is pulling from your own pages, which you control directly. Position tells you whether you're the first name or the fifth, which matters because buyers read top down. And description tells you whether ChatGPT gets you right.
That last one gets missed most often. Being mentioned as a small agency that does social media, when you're actually a B2B content and AI visibility firm, can do more harm than not being mentioned at all. AI sentiment analysis and AI hallucinations about your brand cover what to do when the description is off.
What can GA4 tell you about ChatGPT?
When ChatGPT links to your site and someone clicks, the visit usually shows up in Google Analytics with chatgpt.com as the referrer. Setting up a dedicated AI channel, covered in Google Analytics AI traffic, lets you see those visits, the pages they land on and whether they convert.
What GA4 can't show is the much larger number of answers where you were named and nobody clicked. A buyer who reads your name in a shortlist and later searches for you directly shows up as branded or direct traffic, not as ChatGPT. So treat GA4 as a floor, not the full picture, and pair it with prompt checks.
When is a paid tracking tool worth it?
Manual tracking works well for one brand and a few dozen prompts. It gets painful when you want daily data, several AI platforms, competitor comparisons or more than a handful of products. That's when a prompt tracking tool earns its cost.
Tools such as Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit run your prompts automatically every day, record mentions and cited sources, and show trends over time. AI prompt tracking explains how to read that data without fooling yourself, and AI search visibility tracking compares the wider options. Whatever you choose, keep the same discipline. Report ranges over several weeks, not single days.
What do you do with what you find?
Tracking only matters if it changes what you do. Look first at the sources ChatGPT cites when competitors appear and you don't. Those are the review sites, comparison articles and community threads shaping the answer, and they're where your effort should go. Brand mentions in AI answers explains why off-site mentions carry so much weight.
Then fix your own pages. If ChatGPT never cites you, check that its crawlers can reach your site and that your key pages answer buyer questions directly. Why ChatGPT recommends your competitors walks through the most common causes.
What does a good prompt set look like?
I'd build a first set of 30 prompts across four groups. Around 6 problem prompts, which describe the pain without naming a solution. Around 10 category prompts, the shortlist questions where buyers ask for recommendations. Around 8 comparison prompts that put you next to named competitors or alternatives. And around 6 branded prompts that ask about you directly, including your products and any framework you've named.
Write them the way a real buyer would, with context. A prompt like best content agency is too thin to tell you much. A prompt asking which B2B content agencies are best for a Series B security company that needs to show up in ChatGPT is much closer to what buyers actually type, and it produces answers you can act on.
Then keep the core set stable. If you change prompts every month, you can't tell whether a shift came from your work or from the question. Add new prompts in a separate test group and only move them into the core set after a few months.
How do you turn the log into a monthly report?
Once you have a few sessions logged, five numbers tell most of the story. Mention rate, the share of runs where you were named. Citation share, the share of runs where your own site was cited. Average position when you appear. Competitor mention rate for your two or three closest rivals. And a simple accuracy score for how ChatGPT describes you, rated one to three.
Break each number down by prompt group. Most companies discover they're visible on branded prompts and nearly invisible on category prompts, which is where buying decisions actually start. That single view usually tells you where to focus next quarter.
Then look at the trend, not the month. Three months of data is the minimum before calling anything a real change. Note what you shipped in each period, such as a rebuilt page, a new comparison listing or a piece of coverage, so you can connect movement to the work behind it.
How do you track other AI assistants too?
The same method works across Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, and it's worth running at least a few of them, because they rarely agree. Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, which makes it the easiest place to see which pages are shaping your category. Google's AI features lean heavily on pages that already rank well.
ChatGPT mixes what it learned in training with live search results.
Use the same prompt set on each platform so the results are comparable, and keep each platform in its own tab of the spreadsheet. If you're short on time, run the full set on ChatGPT and a smaller set of category prompts on the others. Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Google AI explains how their citation habits differ.
Where does brand tracking fit in the Engine Optimization Matrix™?
Brand mention tracking measures the Citation column of the Engine Optimization Matrix™, especially the GEO and LLMO rows, which ask whether generative engines name you specifically when prompted. It's the scoreboard that tells you whether your content, schema, distribution and authority work is paying off.

Frequently asked questions
How do I see brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Run a fixed set of buyer prompts in a temporary chat, several times each, and record whether your brand is named and how it's described.
Can I track ChatGPT brand mentions for free?
Yes. A spreadsheet, 20 to 30 prompts and a monthly session of repeated checks gives you a reliable free baseline.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?
Large language models are non-deterministic, so the same prompt can return different lists and sources. Repeat each prompt to get a reliable picture.
How do I measure brand visibility in ChatGPT?
Track mention rate, citations to your site, your position in lists and how accurately you're described, over several weeks.
Does Google Analytics show ChatGPT traffic?
GA4 shows visits from ChatGPT links, usually with chatgpt.com as the referrer, but not answers where you were named without a click.
Why is my brand not showing up in ChatGPT?
Usually because ChatGPT has little trusted evidence about you, from your own pages or from the third party sources it cites.
What tools track brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Prompt tracking tools such as Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit automate daily checks, record cited sources and compare you with competitors.
How often should I check my brand in ChatGPT?
Monthly works for manual tracking. Paid tools check daily, but you should still judge changes over three to four weeks.
How many prompts should I track in ChatGPT?
Around 20 to 30 is enough to start, split across problem, category, comparison and branded prompts.
Should I track other AI assistants besides ChatGPT?
Yes. Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Claude often give different answers, so checking several gives a fuller picture.
Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI search?
Yes. You can track them manually by running repeated buyer prompts across AI assistants, or automatically with AI search monitoring tools.
