Key takeaways

  • AI assistants lean on independent, high-trust sources, so earned media mentions shape whether and how you're named.

  • Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility far more strongly than backlinks.

  • The best PR for AI visibility is specific, repeatable and attributable, such as original data, named frameworks and expert commentary.

  • Measure PR by changes in AI mentions and cited sources over weeks, not by placements alone.

Most companies treat PR and AI visibility as separate projects. One team chases coverage, another tunes content for ChatGPT, and they rarely compare notes. That's a missed opportunity, because PR is one of the most direct levers you have on what AI assistants say about you.

The reason is simple. AI assistants are designed to be skeptical of self-promotion. They give far more weight to what independent, trusted sources say about you than to what your own website claims. PR is the discipline of getting those independent sources to say it.

How do you use PR for AI visibility?

Use PR to earn mentions of your brand, people and ideas on the independent sources AI assistants trust, such as trade publications, analyst coverage, podcasts, comparison articles and expert roundups. Lead with original data and a clear point of view, keep your brand description consistent and track whether AI answers start naming you, the goal behind brand mentions in AI answers.

Why does PR influence AI answers?

When an AI assistant answers a question about your category, it draws on what it learned during training and, often, on a live web search. In both cases, frequent mentions on trusted domains make your brand more likely to appear and more likely to be described the way you'd want, the core idea behind LLM visibility.

The data backs this up. Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and found that web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, compared with 0.218 for backlinks. Correlation isn't proof, but the gap is large enough to change priorities. Being talked about appears to matter more than being linked to. Brand mentions in AI answers covers the research in more depth.

Which kinds of coverage actually move AI visibility?

Not all coverage counts equally. The most useful is specific and repeatable. Original research gives journalists a number to cite, and every article that cites it repeats your name alongside the finding. A named framework builds an association between the idea and your brand. Expert commentary places your people next to the topic in articles AI tools trust. Data-driven content marketing shows how to produce it.

Some formats are especially valuable because AI assistants retrieve them often. Comparison and best-of articles in your category, analyst and industry reports, respected trade publications, podcast transcripts and contributed articles on high-authority sites all show up repeatedly in AI citations. Press releases on their own do little, because they're not independent and they're widely duplicated.

How do you run PR with AI visibility in mind?

Start from the questions, not the outlets. Run your buyers' real questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features and note which sources they cite. Those sources are your PR target list, because they're already shaping the answers. AI search prompts covers building that question set.

Then give those sources a reason to mention you. Publish a piece of original data each quarter, the approach covered in data-driven content marketing. Offer clear expert commentary on topics where you have real experience. Contribute to industry communities and councils, which is part of why I'm a member of the Forbes Communications Council. And keep your brand description identical everywhere, so every mention reinforces the same picture rather than a slightly different one.

What PR mistakes hurt AI visibility?

The biggest is chasing volume over substance. Dozens of thin placements on low-quality sites rarely help, and paid placements disguised as editorial can undermine trust. The second is inconsistency, where each article describes the company differently, which leaves AI assistants with a blurry picture and raises the risk of AI hallucinations about your brand.

The third is ignoring accuracy. Old coverage with outdated facts keeps getting retrieved and repeated, sometimes for years. When you find an AI assistant describing you wrongly, check whether an old article is the source, as covered in AI hallucinations about your brand.

How do you measure PR's impact on AI visibility?

Placements are an output, not the outcome. The outcome is whether AI assistants start naming you, citing coverage about you and describing you accurately. Track a fixed set of buyer prompts before and after a campaign, and watch your mention rate, whether new coverage appears among cited sources and whether your description changes, using AI search visibility tracking.

Give it time. Retrieval-based answers can change within weeks of new coverage being indexed, while changes to what models remember take much longer. How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT and what is share of model explain how to measure both.

What does an AI-first PR plan look like over a quarter?

I like to run AI-first PR in 90-day cycles. In the first month, audit. Run your buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features, list every source cited for your category and record where you're missing. Pick one data story worth telling, ideally something only you can publish, the kind data-driven content marketing produces.

In the second month, create and pitch. Publish the research or analysis, then pitch it to the publications and newsletters that showed up in your citation list. Offer expert commentary on related stories and put your spokespeople forward for podcasts that cover your space.

In the third month, extend and measure. Turn the findings into contributed articles, update your profiles on the review sites AI cites, reach out to the authors of comparison articles with accurate information and rerun your prompts. The aim is a repeatable rhythm, not a single launch.

How do you get into comparison and best-of articles?

Comparison and best-of articles are some of the most cited pages in B2B categories, so they deserve their own effort. Start by finding the ones AI assistants already cite for your category. Then reach out to the authors or editors with accurate, current information, real customer proof and anything genuinely new. It's the fastest fix when ChatGPT recommends competitors instead of you.

Make sure the profiles those articles draw on are complete. Review platforms such as G2 are frequently cited by AI assistants, and a thin or outdated profile works against you. Encourage satisfied customers to leave detailed reviews, and keep descriptions consistent with how you describe yourself elsewhere. Be careful with paid inclusions. A placement that isn't clearly independent rarely carries the same weight with AI or with readers.

How should you brief spokespeople for AI-era coverage?

Coverage only helps AI visibility if it describes you clearly. Give every spokesperson the same one-sentence description of the company and make sure they use it. Prepare two or three specific, quotable points with numbers, because journalists quote specifics and AI assistants lift them, the same principle behind getting cited by AI.

Encourage spokespeople to name your frameworks and products consistently, so each mention reinforces the same association. And ask for accurate company names and links in published pieces whenever you can. Small details like a consistent name and description add up across dozens of articles, and they're what AI assistants eventually repeat.

Where does PR fit in the Engine Optimization Matrix™?

PR drives the Authority column of the GEO and LLMO rows in the Engine Optimization Matrix™, where cross-platform entity consistency and mention density across high-trust domains decide whether generative engines and language models name you. It's the part of AI visibility your own website can't do on its own.

For the full step by step plan, see how to improve brand visibility in AI search engines.

A model can't recommend a brand it doesn't know exists. The Demand Doctrine™ for LLMO covers how to get your brand into what the models remember, not just what they retrieve. Out November 18. Want all four engines? Mastering AI Visibility.
